The most important things you need to know about La Alcaidesa. La Alcaidesa is a large urbanization on the west side of the Costa del Sol, located in the municipality of La Linea and San Roque (Sotogrande), in Campo de Gibraltar (province of Cadiz). The guarded resort was developed in the early 90s. It has good beaches and sea views. It is about an hour and a half’s drive from Málaga airport and about half an hour from Gibraltar airport. La Alcaidesa is a gated community (known as an urbanization in Spanish) near Sotogrande, Spain (within the municipalities of La Línea de la Concepción and San Roque), in the Andalusian province of Cádiz, accessed by junction 124 on the Autovía A-7 coastal motorway. The natural topography allows the town to enjoy an enviable location overlooking the Mediterranean with easy access to Gibraltar, the Campo and the towns of Algeciras and Marbella. The town has two manned, gated access points and mobile security patrols. A fire station exclusively serving Alcaidesa was built in 2008. The town boasts two golf courses, the original is links style, said to be the only one in Spain. The second is a more traditional heathland course. The popular beach called Playa de La Alcaidesa is linked to Playa de La Hacienda, looking towards La Linea it is possible to see Gibraltar (a British overseas territory).

Location Alcaidesa

The main access to the urbanization is via a tree-lined avenue with panoramic views of the Bay. Gibraltar Airport is twenty-minutes-drive away, Malaga International Airport, a one hour drive east and Jerez Airport one and a half hours to the west. A regular bus service operates between Gibraltar and Alcaidesa with a journey time of under thirty minutes. A number of local schools operate a student shuttle service to and from the town. The exclusive resort of Sotogrande renowned for its sporting facilities is close by. Sotogrande is home to the Santa Maria Polo Club, a tennis academy, a number of other sporting facilities and is considered to be one of the most luxurious urbanizations in Europe. The surrounding area is a haven for golf lovers with five fine courses close by including the world famous Valderama, past home to the Ryder Cup and the European Masters.

Sports & Leisure

Although La Alcaidesa is not large, there are two golf courses with spectacular views. Several championships were held here and the golf courses both have a clubhouse with a bar and restaurant. Just a stone’s throw away, in the port of Sotogrande, you can rent sailboats or go fishing for a day at sea. Would you rather be in the water? Then snorkeling or windsurfing is a good option. La Alcaidesa is located in a beautiful green area. Here it is always possible to make a nice walk. A nice ride on horseback or always wanted to learn to play polo? This is also possible in the nearby area.

GOLF ALCAIDESA

GOLF Alcaidesa 36 professional-level holes with spectacular views of the sea, Gibraltar and Africa

Speaking of La Alcaidesa means speaking of golf: close to these four residential developments you will find Alcaidesa Links, the only links course in the south of Europe, which is considered one of the best in Europe in this category and has hosted important tournaments like the PGA of Andalusia and Spain and the Ryder Cup Junior Match. And if you’re looking for a higher level, you only have to take a short trip to Sotogrande, the home of the world-renowned Valderrama course, Almenara or the San Roque Club.

GOLF ALCAIDESA

Golf Alcaidesa Links Golf Resort is located in a matchless setting, surrounded by the exquisite golf courses of Sotogrande and Valderrama and such emblematic municipalities as San Roque, La Línea and Gibraltar. It has two magnificent golf courses: Alcaidesa Links and Alcaidesa Heathland, with a total of 36 professional-level holes with spectacular views of the sea, Gibraltar and Africa. Our sign of distinction is Alcaidesa Links, the only links course in the south of Europe. We also have a magnificent driving range with 72 positions and a practice area with putting green, bunkers and short-game zone.

Guadalquitón Nature Reserve

Running along the eastern perimeter of La Alcaidesa lies the Guadalquitón Nature Reserve. The area consists of a protected stretch of beach, dunes, wetlands and a cork oak forest. The reserve is also home to many protected animal species and a wide variety of plant life.

Beaches & Beach Clubs

La Alcaidesa has one of the best sandy beaches on the coast. Peace and quiet is what you will find here. The beach itself does not really have facilities, except for some toilets and showers. However, it has been awarded a blue flag and offers a fantastic view over Gibraltar and Morocco. D Blanco is a cozy beach bar annex restaurant where you can have a drink. You can also come here all day for something to eat and also during the winter months they are open. The restaurant is specialized in tuna dishes.

Culinary delights

In terms of eateries there is not much choice in La Alcaidesa. But don’t worry because at La Vista Beach by Frank Rosin it is always nice to dine. The restaurant has Greek influences. This is also reflected in the color use of the interior: blue and white. It has a cozy terrace with lounge sofas where you can have a delicious cocktail or a good glass of wine. There are also several tables on the beach where you can dine in style. And all that with a super view of Gibraltar. The dishes are real paintings. Try the freshly grilled pulpo, you won’t regret it!

Lifestyle

Sport, beach, tranquility and nature are the key words of La Alcaidesa. Do you like more action and entertainment? Then you can go to one of the nearby towns. A car is highly recommended in La Alcaidesa, because there is no public transport. You will generally see some elderly people or families with very young children.

Nightlife

In La Alcaidesa you will not find fancy nightclubs or cocktail bars. We therefore refer you to Sotogrande or Marbella. There is only a handful of cafes. At the square in the middle of La Alcaidesa you will find Ivy Wine Bar. Here you will find wine, Gin & Tonic and various beers on tap. It is an English oriented bar that also serves food. Every week there is something new on the menu!

Shopping

Unfortunately, the shopaholics among us don’t get their money’s worth here. There are some stores around the square such as a supermarket, ice cream store and health food store. In the nearby cities such as Sotogrande and La Línea de la Concepción you will find nice boutiques.

Sights

Because la Alcaidesa is a relatively young village you will not find much history and culture here. Nearby you will find the town of La Línea de la Concepción. One of the sights here is the El Museo del Istmo. This museum contains photo collections of more than 2000 negatives about La Línea, archaeological pieces, shells and corals from the coast of Cadiz and everyday objects. In the numerous halls, visitors can see a series of national and international exhibitions on various interesting subjects. In some rooms travelling exhibitions are presented, mainly paintings, sculptures and private collections. If you like sailing, you can certainly moor at La Alcaidesa Marina. On this beautiful harbor there is room for more than 600 boats and there are many facilities to be found. La Alcaidesa Marina has also been awarded the Blue Flag in recognition of its commitment to the sustainable development and operation of the marina.

Construction originally started in the 1990s. La Alcaidesa Inmobiliaria (the Costain/Banesto joint venture company) owned the land and since that time a number of developers have completed further independent communities. The much-improved Spanish economy has provided new confidence among developers with a number of new builds under construction and other contractors lining up to break ground. There are a couple of hotels, one exclusively serves the German market (Aldiana). A small shop selling essentials opened in March 2011 and a pharmacy is on duty. There are two restaurants in the town square and a further all year-round beach bar providing seating inside and out and open throughout the day and evening serving a mixture of meat and fish dishes. A further mall has been constructed with a number of the units now occupied.

in July 2015 there was a reorganisation of the owners due to debts being owed to Banco Santander, Santander now own the two largest pieces of development land currently. Costain own the operating assets of the golf courses and the marina concession, and the associated smaller parcels of land and will retain the balance of the outstanding debt.

In July 2016 wildfires forced the evacuation of many properties and hotels in Alcaidesa.

In 2019 Grupo Millennium purchased Alcaidesa Holding and its subsidiary Alcaidesa Golf SLU for over €15 million from the Costain Group, with plans to build Villas and a hotel.

In summer 2020 works began on the new five-star Millenium hotel in Alcaidesa that is planned to be named “La Hacienda”. The first hotel of this category in the Campo de Gibraltar. This new hotel complex will be built on the H3 plot of Alcaidesa with sea views offering 144 rooms.

There are various independent communities within La Alcaidesa, such as La Corona, a complex of modern townhouses. Another increasingly popular resort near the top of the hill, is Terrazas de Alcaidesa. It nestles in a small valley next to the nature reserve and just below the Golf Club. It comprises just eight buildings of three floors, comprising 110 two and three bedroom apartments, most of which have front and rear terraces. Many apartments are owner occupied, whilst others serve as holiday lets. In the centre are three attractive swimming pools with showers and changing facilities and a paddle tennis court.

Property for Sale in Alcaidesa

La Alcaidesa has an excellent rental market for workers in Gibraltar, especially considering the high rents across the border on the Rock. The area is more upmarket than la Linea and offers a higher standard of living with excellent quality properties combined with better facilities.
